HLTPAT005 Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing.
This unit applies to individuals working in collection centres, in hospitals, in other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing takes place.
Progressive Diagnostics is a nationally Registered Training Organisation (RTO Number 41103).
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

The Wallet Card is a convenient way of having a record of your certification with you at all times. It also lists your Statement of Attainment number which certain organisations require when completing the Chain of Custody form. Your Statement of Attainment remains your official record.

It is a requirement for companies collecting urine or oral fluid samples who wish to meet Australian Standards to have their collectors trained as per the definition of collector under AS/NZS4308:2008 and AS4760:2006.

Our training courses are conducted Face-to-Face either onsite at your workplace or at our training venue and include practical ‘hands-on’ experiences, as well as group classroom-based activities and discussion, including simulations and scenarios.
Blended / online training is also available. Employment pathways could include drug and alcohol testing at mine sites, large industrial sites, transport depots, medical centres and other workplaces or environments where the need for drug and alcohol screening has been identified as a Occupational Health and Safety requirement.

Our assessment process is in accordance with the National Assessment Principles and conforms to the standards of the Australian Qualifications Framework. Where possible the assessment process is as flexible as possible within the requirements of the units of competency.
The course includes written and practical assessments which include practical application, scenarios, role play and general discussion. Throughout the training course participants will need to complete observation/demonstration assessments which will take place either in the workplace or the training environment, depending on the task to be undertaken. A written assessment is also completed which includes answering questions related to both the practical and theory components of the course.
Participants should be able to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and performance criteria required for competency in this unit.
Encouragement and support will be provided throughout the assessment process. Any concerns or issues with undertaking assessments, should be discussed with the trainer so that additional support can be provided if required.
Assessments are conducted according to the guidelines and standards outlined in the Training Package, adhering to the principles of assessment and rules of evidence.
Competence is to be demonstrated over the full range of performance criteria to industry standards.
Assessments will be carried out by qualified assessors.
Progressive Diagnostics supports reasonable adjustment of assessments and will work with clients to maximise opportunities for successful completion of assessment requirements.
