What is the Unique Student Identifier?
Since 1 January 2015, students must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) and provide it when enrolling in any accredited training.
A USI is a reference number made up of numbers and letters that gives you access to your USI account. It is available online at no cost, links your account to the National Vocational Education and Training (VET) Data Collection, and lets you see your training results from all providers — including completed units and qualifications — in a single authenticated transcript.
Your USI stays with you for life and is recorded against any nationally recognised training you undertake, so your VET records are never lost.
Why you need one before you finish your course
Without a USI, Progressive Diagnostics is prevented from issuing your nationally recognised VET qualification or Statement of Attainment when you complete your course. Have your USI ready when you enrol.
How to create your USI
Applying only takes a couple of minutes:
- Have at least one form of ID ready — driver’s licence, Australian passport, Medicare card, visa (with non-Australian passport), Australian birth certificate, immigration card or citizenship certificate.
- Have your personal contact details ready — address, email and/or phone number.
- Create your USI at usi.gov.au, agree to the terms and conditions, and follow the steps.
- Write your USI down and keep it somewhere safe.
