Workplace drug and alcohol testing

We provide a full range of workplace drug and alcohol testing services, including onsite random and incident testing at your workplace. Our testing staff are nationally certified drug and alcohol screening officers, and we come to you.

Why test

A key part of workplace safety

Drug and alcohol use in the community has a direct flow-on effect in the workplace — from incidents and injuries to reduced productivity, absenteeism and staff turnover. Workplace drug and alcohol testing is a key component of a workplace safety program.

We can help you select a testing method, develop a program customised to your requirements, and provide policy assistance, implementation and guidance on regulations.

When to test

When should testing be conducted?

An effective workplace drug and alcohol testing program can include any or all of these, depending on the nature of your business.

Pre-employment

Testing people before they join your organisation, or before they are deployed on an assignment.

Random testing

Randomly selecting a proportion of personnel to be tested.

Blanket testing

Testing all personnel in a single event, across the business or by area or department.

Post-incident testing

Conducting a test after an incident, accident, potential accident or near miss.

For-cause testing

When a manager or supervisor has concerns about an employee’s behaviour, they might request a drug or alcohol test.

Self testing

Providing employees with access to the means to test themselves, to assure they attend work safely.

Return to work

If a worker has previously returned a positive test, they might be required to test negative before returning to duty.

Methods

How testing is conducted

Urine drug testing

Urine may contain detectable levels of drugs or their metabolites for days — and for certain substances weeks — after consumption. The selected toilet area is secured to eliminate adulteration or tampering while respecting the donor’s privacy. The specimen is tested onsite via an instant test device or forwarded directly to the testing laboratory. Non-negative onsite results are forwarded for laboratory confirmation testing.

Oral-fluid (saliva) drug testing

Oral fluid may contain detectable levels of drugs for hours to days after consumption, identified onsite using an oral-fluid swab. If the onsite result is non-negative, a further specimen is collected and forwarded for laboratory confirmation testing.

Breath alcohol testing

Breath alcohol testing is performed in conjunction with all drug testing at no additional cost. Stand-alone breath alcohol testing is also available.

Hair drug testing

Hair testing provides a longer-term view of drug use. Hair grows around one centimetre per month, so a small selection of strands cut from the scalp — the first three centimetres, roughly three months’ growth — is forwarded for laboratory analysis.
